Who Betrays Elizabeth Bennet?: Further Puzzles in Classic Fiction (Oxford World's Classics)
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (October, 1999)
Average review score:

Well, who is it?Wow! I was amazed, especially how Sutherland revised his essays on Wuthering Heights and Mill on the Floss. What marvelous insights? What does Lady Dedlock die of? Why doesn't Laura tell her own story in the Woman in White? Read this marvelous book to find out.

Who's Who in the Twentieth Century (Oxford Paperback Reference)
Published in Paperback by Getty Ctr for Education in the Arts (September, 1999)
Average review score:

A Great Addition to Your Reference LibraryIf you want to know who's who of the 20th Century, this is the book for you. It has brief paragraphs outlining the lives of various persons who have made a great impact on our previous century. Although it appears to be slanted somewhat to Europeans, that could just be my American viewpoint. It is a great introduction for students of famous world figures. A recommended addition to any library.

The Wild Rabbit
Published in Hardcover by Putnam Pub Group Juv (August, 1980)
Average review score:

The European wild rabbit - same as our USA domestic rabbitsThis is a great book. Maybe geared for older children, nevertheless the information at the beginning and the photos that follow are very unique. Several pics of rabbits in their burrows -- the only such pictures I have ever seen. The book is worth buying just for these few photos alone.

Wolf (Oxford Children's Modern Classics)
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (12 November, 1998)

This book is eerie, enthralling and brilliant!I LOVE this book! It's amazing.
It stars Cassy, a young girl raised by her grandmother who is sent on sudden visits to her mother, Goldie (who is slightly 'away with the faries'). Her gran sends her on one of these vists and she starts having nightmares involving wolves, linked in with Goldie's latest project, a play about wolves. And a plot unwinds...
We read this in class and everyone, even the book haters loved it. The plot is on so many levels and it all come together brilliantly. It was exciting and kept me on the edge of my seat until the end- when I went back and read it five more times!
A must read!

Women Musicians of Venice: Musical Foundations 1525-1855 (Oxford Monographs on Music)
Published in Hardcover by Clarendon Pr (October, 1997)
Average review score:

Exceptionally interesting book for the general readerI ordered this book from Amazon because I was interested in Vivaldi's all-girl orchestra. How did such an orchestra come to be? What was its context? Who were the girls (conflicting reports had them orphans, children of prostitutes, unwanted children of the wealthy, etc.)? Who heard them play? What was their schooling like? This book was great! It had the answers and much more. The book presents detailed accounts of the four ospedali that sponsored women's orchestra, including the Ospedale della Pieta, where Vivalidi worked as a violin instructor. The book paints an interesting picture of Venice, the city that was as much a parent to the orchestras as were the ospedali. The book traces the histories of the ospedali, discusses their organization, and devotes considerable attention to the cori (the choir, which was the central musical organization) at each. As it turns out, the violinists trained by Vivaldi seem to be musicians in support of singers performing religious works, including operas, which, in turn support the ospedali. The section on the people at the ospedali devotes attention to the faculty and staff at the schools as much as to the girls who performed there. The section on the daily lives of the musicians was exceptionally interesting.
While the book is a serious work on the history of music, it is easy for the none scholar to read. The book assumes that the reader understands the development of musical styles and tastes. It brings the reader along by mentioning works, but does not give samples of scores to illustrate points. I wished at several points that the author would have included architectural drawings of the ospedali to help me picture what was where. The notes, bibliography, and other documentation are impressive. I ordered the book to learn more about Vivaldi. While Vivaldi does not get much attention here, I learned about an exciting venue in the development of music. This book is worth the price!

Wordsworth and the Victorians (Oxford Authors (Cloth))
Published in Hardcover by Clarendon Pr (April, 1998)
Average review score:

Gill's Wordsworth and the VictoriansThis is a much needed book that shows Wordsworth's influence on Victorian writers and other artists both before and after his death. Gill has painstakingly researched his subject and shows that the later Victorians looked to WW for inspiration and guidance but did not revere him as a god. Their assessment of Wordsworth helped to propel interest in the poet in the 20thC. This book has been long in the making and is a fabulous contribution to Victorian studies and Wordsworth studies.

The Works of Sir Thomas Malory (Oxford English Texts)
Published in Hardcover by Clarendon Pr (October, 1990)
Average review score:

The Definitive Edition of the Morte DarthurThis is the classic scholarly edition of Sir Thomas Malory's _Le Morte Darthur_, the classic tale of King Arthur and his knights. It is based upon the Winchester manuscript instead of Caxton's 1485 edition. It is Prof. Vinaver's contention that Malory did not translate his sources as a single work but rather treated each one as a separate tale. He therefore entitled his edition _Works_ rather than the more usual _Le Morte Darthur_. Readers should be warned that the spelling and grammer of this edition have not been modernized. Like most Middle English texts it is best to read it aloud. The unfamiliar spelling and structure can be easier for the ear to understand than the eye. After all spelling in this period (about 1469) was not standardized and scribes wrote as they spoke.

Wyatt's Hurricane (Oxford Bookworms. Stage 3)

Worth reading....there are 2 types of books that Desmond Bagley wrote. One being utter trash (Flyaway etc) and the other being some of the best thrillers you can read. This one belongs to the latter.
This is one of the most original plot that you can come across. Also, it is based in an unusual location
